Tapplock

This fingerprint enabled Tapplock is cooler than padlock

Padlock was invented in the 19th century and its still surviving with the same design and working style. From the design to the key technology, padlock has never changed a bit. It’s true that a lot of companies are trying to make padlocks more cooler with interesting number lock features, but nothing is as cooler as a Tapplock.

Imagine if you had the access to unlock your padlock with your fingerprint? wouldn’t it be so comfortable? how about sharing unlocking access to your wife or a close friend visiting your apartment today? that’s Tapplock.

Tapplock

Tapplock

Tapplock is a fingerprint sensor powered lock which looks similar to a padlock, but you can unlock it with your fingerprint (you don’t need a key).

Tapplock was an indiegogo campaign and finally the product is out for sale. The working of this product is pretty basic, you can connect the lock with your smartphone via bluetooth and add your fingerprint (upto 500 fingerprints) to unlock it.

You can also unlock the Tapplock with three options. Fingerprint is the primary key, you can also unlock it with your smartphone using the Tapplock app (via bluetooth connectivity) or you can use morse code which is a pattern of short and long button press (the power key).

Sharing

The best part about Tapplock is that you can share the lock access to other people. It could be your friend, relative or someone you want to grant the access to unlock. The process of giving access is easy and it could be done remotely.

The app provides you the facility to invite people via email, so that they’ll be able to unlock your Tapplock with their mobile phone or their fingerprint. You can revoke the access anytime or set it permanently accessible(even one-time access is possible).

You can even set the time, location etc to keep the lock safe. The build quality is insane and Tapplock is totally okay with rain and water contact. The product comes with an inbuilt anti-theft facility which will alarm when someone tries to break the lock.

You’ll be able to see the logs of unlocking and locking with more details.

Battery

Tapplock

Tapplock has an insane battery backup of approximately one year which depends on the usage. The more you unlock, lesser the battery life. The lock comes with a magnetic charging port and it takes two hours to fully charge the device (that’s kinda acceptable).

It may go upto one year (3500 fingerprint unlocks) with a single charge. Even if you run out of charge, you would be able to unlock the device with the morse code which you’ve set in the app.

Goodbye, Padlock

Tapplock

Well, it’s not practical enough to say a big goodbye to padlocks yet. The cost of a Tapplock comes under the $100 range, whereas a padlock is as cheap as $5 — $10.

So Tapplock is definitely not the optimal solution to replace the long surviving padlocks, but Tapplock is indeed an efficient option if you’re very much in need of those features like sharing access or theft protection.

Every product is getting smarter with technology, the padlocks just got a better face which might be helpful to a group of people, but will it replace the padlocks? only time will tell.
